a grass fire transforms into a tornado of flames. multiple wildfires threatening the western communities this morning. and the latest on that terrifying helicopter crash. the chopper crash landing into the waters of pearl harbor. the investigation into what exactly happened. good friday morning. in the countdown to the south carolina primaries and the nevada caucuses the candidates are stepping up their attacks hoping to sway the undecided voters. >> and then there's the clash that's pitting donald trump against pope francis and it is taking a new turn this morning. when the pope said trump's plan to build a wall between the u.s. and mexico was not christian, trump fired back calling the pope disgraceful, but overnight trump backtracked a bit. >> it's "your voice, your vote" and abc's ray raimundi gathering the latest overnight starting with the democrats.

statement last night, trump claimed that he didn't remember the interview. >> it was probably the first time i was asked about it. by the time the war started, i was against it and shortly thereafter i was really against it. >> trump also refused to say whether he thought president george w. bush was lying when he said that iraq had weapons of mass destruction, a charge he leveled at the last republican debate. and one touching moment on the trail yesterday. ohio governor john kasich giving a long hug to a college student who told kasich that he gave him hope. brett smith said that a friend had recently committed suicide. his parents divorced and his dad lost his job. kasich told the young man, the lord will give you strength, i promise. >> very unusual moment and touching one there. in washington, d.c. a final farewell begins today for the late supreme court justice antonin scalia. scalia's body will lie in repose in the great hall of the supreme court. he died on saturday during a trip to texas. president obama and the first

the court this afternoon. and vice president joe biden will attend scalia's funeral mass tomorrow, but biden says he has no interest in replacing the justice. in an interview with msnbc, the vice president said he has no desire to sit on the high court even if he was asked, but he also said, you never tell a president for certain you wouldn't do anything. the vice president also criticized republicans for saying the president should not nominate a replacement. well, the u.s. has hit north korea with more sanctions because of its nuclear program. president obama has quietly signed the punitive measure which was overwhelming ly ly approved by congress last week. it comes as the u.s. and china are in delicate negotiations over new u.n. sanctions. one senate sponsor of the u.s. measure hopes that china will notice the strong support for sanctions. back here at home more than two months after the terror attacks in san bernardino, the fbi tells abc news it's still not ruling out the possibility that a third militant was at that scene. the agency is also still looking

by the shooters. agents searched the home of syed farook's brother. no arrests were made, but several boxes and a computer and other items were removed. the fbi does have syed farook's iphone, but they can't get any information out of it. the data on it is encrypted, and apple remains firm in refusing to unlock it despite that court order. well, now google, facebook, twitter and microsoft all say unlocking the phone for the fbi might set a precedent for other cases. well, there are more than two dozen grass fires burning in eastern oklahoma. that's the most in years. officials say numerous homes were lost, but they don't know how many. the city of tulsa has been filled with smoke from the fires. firefighters are using helicopters to dump water on the fires, and officials say that the fires are not as intense now. well, more dramatic video as a huge brush fire near kansas city creates a fire tornado. the fire is on prison property,

there. firefighters believe it was started by a lawn mower. so far it has consumed about 1,500 acres. it's about 75% contained. no homes are threatened at this time. okay, so it has rained every day for the past eight days in the pacific northwest, and as you can see on the radar there, it's not going to change before the weekend is over. the latest storm will also drop another 6 to 12 inches of fresh snow on the cascade mountains. elsewhere it'll feel like spring in the midwest and the south with incredibly warm temperatures for this time of year, but strong winds will increase the dangers of more brush fires, but it will be chilly in the northeast. well, coming up, the alert for commuters, thousands of bridges in serious need of repair. and some video tough for land lovers to watch, a boat in trouble, or is it really? we'll explain. but first pothole protection. the tire-saving technology coming to a popular american vehicle.

okay, so the arrow there is apparently pointing to what nasa says is a giant galaxy containing one of the largest black holes ever observed. the picture was taken by the hubble space telescope. the black hole is said to have 21 billion times the mass of our sun. well, a massive natural gas leak that sickened and displaced residents of a los angeles neighborhood for months has been plugged, and now the clock is ticking for the thousands who fled the noxious fumes to return home but despite assurances that the air quality is safe, many porter ranch residents are not so sure. some are fearful poisonous chemicals may have settled in their homes. a new study finds that more than 58,000 of the nation's

getting under way in hawaii into that shocking helicopter crash that we've shown you. >> the chopper slammed down into the waters of pearl harbor then witnesses swung into action to try to save those on board. abc's david kerley has the details. >> reporter: it happened in just seconds. the helicopter just short of land rolling over in the water. >> oh. >> reporter: bystanders jump in to help the five on board. a knife needed reportedly to free one of them. >> i saw from the pilot's side and backseat and saw it was twisted so instinct. >> reporter: all survived. one in a neck brace, a 16-year-old male in critical condition. the chopper coming down in pearl harbor near the "uss arizona" memorial. >> that was scary. we were thinking we would see a dead body come up. >> reporter: it was clear the tail rotor was not turning and the sound from the engine in erratic. scott rife is a helicopter pilot

>> it appears he lost power and disengaged the rotor system from the engine. may have flared too high and didn't have enough energy to cushion the landing. >> reporter: the bell 206 was built in 1979 and owned by what appears to be a one-helicopter tour company called genesis. the surviving pilot should be able to tell investigators exactly what went wrong. david kerley, abc news, washington. one more item involving pope francis. his eyebrow raising comment about the zika virus outbreak. he suggested that women threatened with the virus could use contraception. pregnant mothers are among those most vulnerable to the zika virus. the pope said he believes there is a clear, moral difference between preventing pregnancy and aborting a fetus. he also completely rejected abortion as a response to the crisis. well, there is a new warning about breast-feeding especially long term. children may get too little vitamin d that way.

the terrifying encounter captured on cell phone video. the driver said the students were too loud to drive safely at first the driver was only suspended while the incident was being investigated but that investigation found that the driver failed to follow proper procedures when crossing a railroad track. the driver was fired. and over in australia another terrifying close call captured on video. catch warefully. a man carrying a skateboard crosses the train tracks and nearly misses getting crushed by that train. the driver spots him on the tracks, sounds his horn and hits the emergency brakes after seeing the train hurling towards him. the quickly -- the man quickly runs back to the original platform. onlookers were absolutely stunned by all of this. >> oh, my gosh, this is so hard to watch. unbelievable. sportswise the nba and nhl seasons are grinding on and sports training under way. this weekend it's the fifth round of soccer's fa cup in
